Overview
The Department of Physics and Astronomy offers both undergraduate and graduate programs in physics, with opportunities for professional preparation in a variety of subfields, including astronomy, astrophysics, biophysics, condensed matter physics, and nuclear physics.
The department’s undergraduate programs include the Bachelor of Science (BS) degree in Physics, the Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree in Physics, and a Minor in Physics for students majoring in other fields. The BS in Physics consists of two options: a general program without specialization and an option in Biophysics. The BA in Physics also consists of two options: a general program without specialization and an option in Astrophysics. Both the BA and BS programs have an optional departmental honors program for qualified students. In addition, the Department participates in the interdisciplinary Bachelor of Science (BS) degree program in Natural Science and in the subject matter preparation for the Single Subject Teaching Credential in Science through their Physics emphases.
The department’s graduate program consists of a Master of Science (MS) degree in Physics that offers students a choice between two culminating experiences: a comprehensive exam or a research thesis. The MS program prepares students for PhD programs in physics and astronomy and related careers in academia, industry, business, and government.
