Overview

The College of Professional and Global Education (PaGE) is ever-evolving to consistently deliver timely and relevant higher and extended education programs to individuals, businesses, government and non-profits throughout southern California. PaGE’s multi-faceted regional and international student focus nurtures minds and advances careers. Through innovative curriculum and life-changing experiences, students gain new perspectives, become more informed and ready for the challenges ahead.


Opened in 2016, Cal State LA Downtown extends the University’s footprint of high quality teaching and extensive resources to students working and living in the heart of Los Angeles. Our state-of-the-art and spacious DTLA campus offers undergraduate and graduate programs, certificate programs and professional development programs to meet the needs of the region, as well as current and future workforce demands.


Incoming international students continue to choose Cal State LA as a destination university. International Programs and Global Education (IPGE) guides their enrollment and helps them create a pathway to Cal State LA, and maximize their studies once they are here. Furthering our cross-cultural reach, IPGE also creates many Study Abroad options for Cal State LA students to gain invaluable international experiences and skills that enhance their future careers in a global society. Designed for students with advanced English language skills, the Semester in LA program provides international students with a unique opportunity to experience the best of American university life without formal admission to Cal State LA. Students can take classes over one or two semesters alongside U.S. students.

Cal State LA Downtown

Cal State LA Downtown fulfills the University’s vision of Cal State LA serving as the city’s university via engagement, service and the public good. Cal State LA Downtown offers degree and certificate programs in addition to specialized professional development courses designed to meet the educational and professional needs of individuals and organizations in the downtown Los Angeles area. Designed to be an inviting space that meets the needs of 21st century learners, Cal State LA Downtown features 12 classrooms, two state-of-the art computer labs, comfortable student lounge areas, collaborative work spaces, conference and event space, as well as administrative and faculty offices. Boasting the latest in educational technology, each classroom is technology-enhanced and Wi-Fi enabled. Degree Programs

Academic Advisement

All academic offerings are subject to the same policies and procedures in place at the University, without exception. Advisors within the College provide prospective and enrolled students with advisement related to potential program options, registration, and course selection. Students are advised to consult with an academic advisor before undertaking any program of study.

Accelerated Bachelor of Science in Nursing Program (ABSN)

The Accelerated Bachelor of Science in Nursing Program (ABSN) is for non-RN students who already hold a bachelor’s degree in a field other than nursing. One cohort is admitted in June of each year… Students will complete approximately 53 semester units of study in both didactic and clinical coursework over 15 months of study. Upon completion of the program, students will be awarded their Bachelor of Science degrees in Nursing from Cal State LA. Completion of the degree program enables individuals to sit for the NCLEX examination for RN licensure.

ADN-BSN Collaborative Program

The ADN-BSN Collaborative Program is a collaborative, dual-enrollment program between 13 local community college partners and Cal State LA that facilitates seamless academic progression to Cal State LA for ADN-BSN students. Students must be enrolled in the ADN program at a community college partner and successfully complete their first and second semesters in the ADN program before starting their first Cal State LA Summer Session. Collaborative Program students who successfully meet Cal State LA’s program requirements will transition after graduation from the ADN program to the Cal State LA BSN program. This Collaborative Program enables the ADN RN to earn a BSN degree in one year after graduating from community college.

Bachelor of Arts in Communication

Offered at Cal State LA Downtown, the Bachelor of Arts in Communication program with an option in Organizational Communication is designed for individuals and working professionals with an interest in obtaining a degree in a broad, but growing field. Students will be prepared for diverse careers in areas such as marketing, sales, consulting, public relations, business, management, human resources, public affairs, fundraising, development and civil service, among others. The broad nature of the curriculum also makes it applicable to students seeking advancement in any career.

Bachelor of Arts in Psychology

Offered at Cal State LA Downtown, the Bachelor of Arts in Psychology program provides students with the communication and interpersonal skills needed to enter a variety of professions in distinct fields that range from human services and education to business operations and rehabilitation services. Throughout this degree completion program, students will be prepared to implement valuable problem-solving techniques and to collect, organize, analyze and interpret data to gain a better understanding of human behavior.

Bachelor of Science in Business Administration

Offered at Cal State LA Downtown, the Bachelors of Science Degree Completion Program in Business Administration, Management Option, is designed to provide students with the tools, techniques and ethics required to succeed in business and related fields. The program develops competence in management and supervisory processes used by executives, supervisors, and comparable administrative officers in industry, finance, government and labor.

Fully Employed MBA Program

Offered at Cal State LA Downtown, the Fully Employed MBA (FEMBA) Program is designed to meet the needs of business professionals with busy schedules. Students complete their degree in 16 months through a hybrid schedule of convenient Saturday classes and experiences on-campus, combined with online learning during the week. By earning an MBA, working executives and professionals can build upon their experience to enhance their leadership, analytic and communication skills in order to make a greater impact on their careers in an increasingly multicultural and globalized economy.

Master of Music in Choral Conducting (MMCC)

The Master of Music in Choral Conducting (MMCC)is a unique program that will helps students refine conducting and rehearsal techniques, musicianship, and vocal pedagogy with the guidance of hands-on attention from prestigious and experienced faculty. Each summer residency is seven weeks long and includes a one-week choral festival of lectures, master classes and performances with prominent guest artists. The MMCC Program is accredited through the National Association of Schools of Music (NASM).

Master of Public Health

The Master of Public Health (MPH) offered at Cal State LA Downtown includes a unique focus on urban community health serving diverse populations in urban areas like Los Angeles. Students will understand how to improve health outcomes at the population level and how a variety of factors can impact the health of local communities. Cal State LA’s program allows both recent bachelor’s degree recipients and seasoned public health professionals to learn the intricacies of this growing field.

Master of Social Work

The Master of Social Work, Advanced Standing (MSW ASP) program offered at Cal State LA Downtown prepares graduate students for entry into advanced and specialized social work practice where they will be able to provide effective service to individuals, families, groups, organizations and communities. The ASP facilitates completion of the MSW degree requirements for students with a bachelor’s degree in social work from an accredited school of social work, and allows them to complete their degree in one year. Cal State LA’s program starts with a summer term. Following the successful completion of the their Summer Term, core content from the first year of the traditional MSW program will be waived and students will be advanced to candidacy to begin upper division graduate level coursework aligned with the traditional program curriculum.

Post-Baccalaureate Programs

Clinical Laboratory Scientist

Designed to address the critical shortage of clinical laboratory scientists, the one-year post-baccalaureate training program Clinical Laboratory Scientist (CLS) Certificate has established partnerships with a consortium of clinical laboratories for the required bench training. The CLS program provides both didactic and practical clinical training in hematology, clinical chemistry, blood banking, microbiology and immunology to prepare students to sit for the State of California CLS licensing exam (American Society of Clinical Pathology MLS exam).

Clinical Genetic Molecular Biologist Scientist

The Clinical Genetic Molecular Biologist Scientist post-baccalaureate program provides training that prepares graduates for positions as Clinical Genetic Molecular Biologist Scientists (CGMBS). A licensed CGMBS performs specialized molecular biology diagnostic tests in hospital clinical laboratories, in commercial reference laboratories, or in research and development for biotech companies. This one-year program is approved by the California Department of Public Health, Laboratory Field Services.

Post-Baccalaureate Certificate in Nutritional Science

Students in the Post-Baccalaureate Certificate in Nutritional Science program receive a broad education in the sciences, take specialized nutrition courses including medical nutrition therapy, food service, and community nutrition. As an evidence-based discipline, students are taught to analyze the science and be able to communicate in writing and through presentations to the general public. This program is a track that falls under the University’s accredited Didactic Program in Dietetics (DPD) by the Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics Education (ACEND) of the Academy of Nutrition and

Certificate Programs

Community Teaching Artist

In collaboration with the City of Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs, the Community Teaching Artist Certificate non-credit program provides a theoretical and practical foundation from which teaching artists can assess and deepen their own practice in the communities they serve. The program focuses on a broad curriculum, pedagogy and professionalization in applied community arts education, allowing dynamic artistic and cultural leaders enhanced and improved efficacy and marketability. In addition, teaching artists build on their own creative capital and gain insights into adapting and orienting themselves in diverse community settings.

Healthcare Revenue Cycle Administration

Offered at Cal State LA Downtown, and in collaboration with Cedars-Sinai and Healthcare Business Insights (HBI), the Certificate Program in Healthcare Revenue Cycle Administration non-credit program prepares students to work as a patient financial services/patient accounting representative in a healthcare setting. The course reflects experiences in all aspects of the hospital revenue cycle, with a focus on payment variance identification and resolution. Students will be awarded a certificate as a Revenue Cycle Administrator after successfully completing this course with an 80% or better average.

Leadership

Offered at Cal State LA Downtown, the Professional Certificate Program in Leadership non-credit program develops leaders at all stages of career growth and professional development, including aspirational leaders. Designed to increase the capacity for change and adaptation for newly oriented leaders or those seeking leadership roles, Cal State LA’s program helps individuals master core competencies for both themselves and their teams, including boosting self-confidence, cultivating group dynamics, fostering innovation, and developing decision-making abilities. A strengths-based approach and practice-based simulations help diverse professionals master effective leadership techniques in versatile situations and real-life settings.

Paralegal Studies

Offered at Cal State LA Downtown, the Paralegal Studies Certificate program has been American Bar Association (ABA) approved since 1978, making it one of the earliest approved programs in a university setting in California. The program curriculum is designed to equip students with a strong foundation of legal knowledge and the ability to apply this knowledge to a variety of practical tasks required of the profession. As legal professionals, paralegals are able to interview clients, perform legal research, as well as draft and analyze legal documents. This program awards extension credit. Cal State LA’s Paralegal Studies Certificate program satisfies the requirements of Business and Professionals Code Section 6450. However, paralegals may not provide legal services directly to the public except as permitted by law.

Project Management

Offered at Cal State LA Downtown San Gabriel Valley, the Professional Certificate in Project Management Program prepares individuals with the leadership, communication and technical skills required to effectively plan, manage and control projects. Found in many industries, project management roles are in high demand. The project manager works with a number of individuals toward an end goal, and is tasked with keeping the team on schedule and within budget. He or she must communicate well with a variety of people, including management and clients internally and externally, keeping in mind the message may vary depending on the audience. This program awards extension credit.

Professional Training Programs

Accounting and Tax Seminars

For over 30 years Cal State LA’s Accounting and Tax Seminars programs have presented current, topical information for tax practitioners including CPAs, auditors, attorneys and accounting managers. These seminars are presented by leading practitioners and experts in their respective fields in the format of one-half day, full-day, and five or more full-day programs. The program, offered twice per year strives to be affordable, convenient and timely. The seminars qualify for the continuing professional education credit (CPE and MCLE) of both the California State Board of Accountancy and the State Bar of California.

Bilingual Authorization Program

Designed for credentialed Los Angeles area teachers with an interest in adding bilingual authorization approved by the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CCTC) to their skill set, the Bilingual Authorization program (offered off-site) qualifies students for authorization in one of the following Cal State LA approved languages: Spanish, Korean, Mandarin, Cantonese, and Tagalog. Non-credentialed students can also enroll in the program and gain insight into working and teaching in bilingual/multicultural settings including immersion and bilingual education classes. Upon completion of the program, students will be prepared to develop, implement, and adapt curriculum and instructional strategies in bilingual, dual language, and cross-cultural settings.

Medical Billing and Coding

Offered at Cal State LA Downtown, the Medical Billing and Coding Program is an80-hour billing and coding course that offers the skills needed to resolve insurance billing problems, manually file claims (using the CPT and ICD-10 manual), complete common insurance forms, trace delinquent claims, appeal denied claims and use generic forms to streamline billing procedures. After obtaining practical work experience (six months to two years), students who complete this course may be qualified to sit for the American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC) - Certified Professional Coder Exam (CPC or CPC-H Apprentice); the American Health Information Association (AHIMA) Certified Coding Associate (CCA) exam; or other National Certification Exams.

Oracle Database Administration Training

The Oracle Database Administration Training program is an online program that provides students with the training and fundamental skills needed for designing and maintaining an enterprise’s databases using the world’s number one database, Oracle. A voucher for the Oracle Certification Exam is also included.

Oracle Java SE 8 Training

The Java SE 8 Online Training Program is an online program that enables individuals with little or no programming experience to learn object-oriented programming using the Java language. This program equips students with a solid foundation to build upon throughout their software development career. Also included are practice exercises and valuable information to help you get certified as an Oracle Certified Associate, Java SE 8 Programmer. Students also receive a voucher for the Oracle Certification Exam.

Pharmacy Technician

Offered at Cal State LA Downtown, the Pharmacy Technician Program is a comprehensive 10-week course that prepares students to work as a pharmacy technician in retail or other pharmacy settings. The program examines the knowledge areas critical to the pharmacy technician practice. Pharmacology for technicians, laws and regulations, compounding, medication safety, quality assurance, order entry and fill process, inventory management, billing and reimbursement, information systems usage, and the Pharmacy Technician Certification Exam (PTCE) are explored. The curriculum focuses on three core area including: pharmacology, law and practical wisdom.

Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) Certification Prep

Offered at Cal State LA Downtown, the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) Certification Preparation program is designed to provide SHRM credential candidates an opportunity to expand and test their knowledge and practical competencies in areas critical for career success in human resource management. The new standard for HR professionals around the globe, SHRM certification focuses on practical HR information and encourages students to apply concepts, using behavioral judgment, and to understand best practices for handling both day-to-day and unexpected scenarios.

Strategies for Professionals: Improvisation and Acting

Offered at Cal State LA Downtown, the Strategies for Professionals: Improvisation and Acting program utilizes the approaches and exercises developed in the realm of improvisation and acting to assist business professionals in developing and increasing their interpersonal (speaking, listening, presenting, pitching, networking) and intrapersonal (self-awareness, nonverbal communication, managing emotions, being respectful of others, showing empathy and understanding) skills. The intimate workshop format will allow participants to engage with an experiential trainer and connect with other business professionals, resulting in real-time coaching and feedback. This course adopts the fundamentals of actor training, based on the concepts of diving deeper in to exercises where you discover your voice, overcome fear and spark creativity.

Institutional Programs

Open University

Open University allows eligible individuals to take Cal State LA credit classes, on a space-available basis, without being admitted to the University. Approval to enroll in classes is subject to meeting course requirements/prerequisites. To register, individuals must first obtain the instructor’s permission to add the class, and then obtain the academic department office’s approval prior to paying the course fee. Formal admission to Cal State LA is not required, but the classes taken through Open University may allow you to earn credits in order to complete a degree, improve your grade point average to enable you, if you have been disqualified, to be reinstated, or apply the earned credits toward a future degree.

Summer Session

Summer Session allows eligible individuals to take Cal State LA credit classes, on a space-available basis, without being admitted to the University. Approval to enroll in classes is subject to meeting course requirements/prerequisites. The University’s excellent academic programs attract international students from around the world.The Cal State LA International Office provides assistance in admission, orientation, and counseling to all international students and scholars, permanent resident alien students, and refugees. Students interested in organizing national or cultural clubs may obtain support and guidance from the International Office. The professional staff offers advising for educational, social, or personal issues. The International Office provides assistance and guidance to students who wish to obtain practical training and maintain compliance with U.S. immigration requirements. International Programs and Global Engagement

The University’s excellent academic programs attract international students from around the world. International Programs and Global Engagement (IPGE) provides assistance in admission, orientation, and counseling to all Cal State LA international students and scholars, permanent resident alien students, and refugees. Students interested in organizing national or cultural clubs may obtain support and guidance from IPGE. The professional staff offers advising for educational, social, or personal issues. IPGE provides assistance and guidance to students who wish to obtain practical training and maintain compliance with U.S. immigration requirements. IPGE also provides assistance to visa students, foreign scholars, and foreign faculty with visa issuance (F and J visas), maintenance of student status, and matters that involve the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. Study Abroad

Developing intercultural communication skills and international understanding among its students is a vital mission of Cal State LA. International Programs and Global Engagement provides assistance to students interested in studying abroad. Participants earn resident academic credit at Cal State LA while they pursue full-time study at a host university or special study center abroad. Study in L.A. Program

Designed for students with advanced English language skills, the Semester in LA program provides international students with a unique opportunity to experience the best of American university life without applying for admission to a Cal State LA degree program.
