The Charter College of Education offers programs leading to the Bachelor of Science degree (in Rehabilitation Services), the Bachelor of Arts degree (in Urban Learning), master’s degrees, one joint doctoral degree, one independent doctoral degree, as well as credentials and certification for specified fields of professional service in California public schools and other public and private agencies. Because the campus is located in the heart of metropolitan Los Angeles, the Charter College of Education is committed to enabling educational leaders to meet high standards and ensure the maximum learning and achievement potential of culturally and linguistically diverse urban learners. The vision of the college is “promoting an inclusive environment to support caring professional educators for the future, so that all learners achieve their fullest potential.”

Accreditation

All credential programs are approved by the California Committee on Accreditation (COA). Programs in the college are also nationally accredited by the Council for the Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP), , the National Association of School Psychologists (NASP), the American Speech, Language and Hearing Association (ASHSA), and Applied Behavior Analysis International (ABAI).

Degrees Offered

The Charter College of Education offers the following degrees: Doctor of Philosophy in Special Education (offered jointly with UCLA), Doctor of Education, Master of Arts, Master of Science, Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science, which are briefly described below:

Doctor of Philosophy Degree in Special Education

offered jointly with the University of California, Los Angeles, provides preparation for leadership positions in higher education and the public schools as well as preparation for a career in scholarly research.

Doctor of Education Degree in Educational Leadership

with specializations in both PreK-12 Education and Postsecondary Education is designed to prepare educators to lead reform efforts in California’s Pre-Kindergarten through 12th grade schools, community colleges and postsecondary institutions. The degree program is designed specifically for working professionals in the field of education.

Master of Arts Degree in Education

with the following options:

Bilingual/Multicultural Education in the Urban Classroom option offers candidates the opportunity to examine theory, research, and classroom practices in instructional programs for language minority students in California public schools.
Educational Technology Leadership prepares educators to assume leadership roles in the field of educational technology. In particular, the program is designed to prepare computer-using teachers, e-learning developers and trainers, technology coordinators and specialists, and other instructional technology experts for PK-12 schools and other educational and training settings.
Curriculum and Instruction provides educators with the opportunities for the development of skills and knowledge to conduct inquiry, to design curriculum and instructional programs, to implement programs, and to assess the success of those programs in the K - 12 school levels. Students may choose one of three emphases for specialization.
Early Childhood/Primary Education option offers the opportunity to focus on practical classroom application in early childhood education based on current theory and research. This option allows candidates to develop their knowledge and skills in a variety of topics related to early childhood education.
Educational Foundations is an interdisciplinary academic program option, which draws on conceptual frameworks and methodologies from the humanities, social sciences, and behavioral science. This degree program, is designed to prepare teachers and other educational professionals (e.g. psychologists, counselors, and administrators working in schools, government, business, or civic agencies) to understand and respond to the social contexts that give meaning to education both in and out of schools.
Mathematics Education prepares teachers for leadership roles to improve mathematics learning in elementary and middle schools. Courses translate theory and research into teaching practices for diverse learners with an emphasis on the use of technologies and active learning.
E-Learning and New Media Design prepares instructional design and technologists for a wide variety of education and training settings to acquire knowledge and skills in applying and developing new technologies, with advanced video, mobile, and multimedia techniques to enhance the learning experience of students at all levels.
Integrated STEM provides educators with the opportunity to develop their pedagogical skills and knowledge in teaching science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (thus, meeting Common Core State Standards in Mathematics and Next Generation Science Standards), strengthen their capacity for addressing the needs of diverse learners (especially those with special needs), build collaboration in educational contexts, access and value knowledge from multiple sources, all grounded in the pursuit of equity.
Reading option is designed to provide proficiency in the specialized teaching of reading/language arts. It satisfies content requirements established by the International Reading Association for reading/language arts specialization.
Research and Evaluation offers candidates the opportunity to examine theory and practice in educational research and evaluation; to participate in research or evaluation projects in school districts, non-profit organizations or at the university, and to assume leadership roles in research and evaluation.

Master of Arts Degree in Educational Administration

prepares experienced educators for the California Administrative Services Credential with an understanding of American urban life , and presents opportunities for in-depth study of administering, managing, supervising, coordinating, and directing public and non-public schools.

Master of Arts Degree in Special Education

provides administrators, teachers, and therapists with advanced preparation for work with exceptional learners. MA candidates must incorporate the credential requirements in their area of specialization as a part of their program. (This requirement may be waived for personnel in related fields, such as nurses, occupational or physical therapists, or speech language pathologists.) The MA programs include a choice among a variety of options.
Autism Spectrum Disorders option is designed to provide advanced training in providing behavioral and educational support to individuals with autism. This program will offer students substantive opportunity to acquire an in-depth knowledge and in-depth understanding of the needs of individuals with autism and the skills to address those needs.
Early Childhood Special Education option is designed to provide administrators, teachers and therapists with advanced preparation work with children with special needs, birth to age 5.
Mild/Moderate Disabilities option provides administrators, teachers and therapists with advanced preparation for work with students with mild/moderate support needs, K-12.
Moderate/Severe Disabilities option provides administrators, teachers and therapists with advanced preparation for work with students with significant support needs, K-12.
Multicultural/Multilingual Special Education option provides administrators, teachers and therapists with advanced preparation for work with students with special needs who come from diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds.
Physical and Health Impairments option provides administrators, teachers and therapists with advanced preparation for work with students with physical and health impairments, birth to age 22.
Visual Impairments and Blindness: Orientation and Mobility (with the Clinical Rehabilitative Services Credential) prepares candidates to teach children and adults with visual impairments how to move about and travel safely in home, school, and community environments. Graduates commonly work in public school systems, Veteran’s Administration, and public agencies. Graduates of this option are eligible for national orientation and mobility certification, through the Academy for Certification of Vision Rehabilitation and Education Professionals (ACVREP).
Visual Impairments and Blindness: Teacher Preparation option provides administrators, teachers and therapists with advanced preparation for work with students with visual impairments, birth to age 22.

Master of Arts Degree in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL)

prepares teachers for a wide variety of positions both in the U.S. and abroad. Students may select coursework that prepares them for several career choices, including the following: English as a Second Language (ESL) or English as a Foreign Language (EFL) instruction in the U.S. or in a non English-speaking setting abroad; K-12, adult education, or post secondary settings; and research in Applied Linguistics. The program emphasizes language acquisition processes, teaching methodology, linguistics, language testing, research, and sociocultural influences.

Master of Science Degree in Counseling

includes the following options:

Applied Behavior Analysis option is designed for graduate students who plan to work as behavior analysts, case managers or consultants, counselors in the schools, and for those who elect to specialize in the behavioral area for doctoral training.

Marriage and Family Therapy, with the Pupil Personnel Services Credential in School Counseling, option is designed to train family systems oriented counselors who are eligible to: (1) obtain the Pupil Personnel Services Credential with Advanced Authorizations in School Counseling and Child Welfare and Attendance Services; and (2) apply for licensure in California as a Marriage, Family and Child Counselor.

Rehabilitation Counseling option prepares students to: (1) function effectively as professional rehabilitation counselors in a variety of employment settings; and (2) develop their own skills to function effectively at the time of graduation and beyond as the profession changes.

School Psychology option prepares students to focus on the psychoeducational development of individuals from birth to age 21, their abilities and potentialities, and biological, emotional, behavioral, and cultural factors that influence the learning process.
Students who earn the this option also qualify for the Pupil Personnel Services credential with advanced specialization in School Psychology and Advanced Specialization in Child Welfare and Attendance Services.

Bachelor of Arts Degree in Urban Learning

The Bachelor of Arts degree in Urban Learning is an Integrated Elementary Subject Matter Preparation Program designed to prepare teachers grounded in contemporary urban pedagogy and culturally responsive teaching for diverse urban elementary (K-6) or special education (K-12 or birth-22) classrooms. The major combines an interdisciplinary approach to urban learning as a social phenomenon with elementary subject matter courses and teacher preparation leading to a) the Multiple Subject teaching credential (elementary education); b) the Education Specialist (special education) teaching internship credential in one of four disciplines or; c) dual credentials in elementary and special education (mild/moderate disabilities). Students who satisfy the major and teacher preparation requirements for their chosen option must complete a minimum of 120-135 units to graduate.

Students in the Urban Learning major will satisfy General Education requirements as part of the 84-unit elementary subject matter waiver program. Prospective students preparing to transfer from a community college should seek advisement from a counselor or their campus transfer center, and complete a program of General Education coursework, which satisfies the requirements for the elementary subject matter waiver program and CSU-GE or IGETC certification. Students pursuing a teaching credential in Options 1, 2, and 3 should review all requirements posted on the Charter College of Education, Office for Student Services website.

Bachelor of Science Degree in Rehabilitation Services

specializes in preparing students to work in a variety of occupational settings. In these settings, they will promote independence, integration, and full participation of individuals with rehabilitation needs in the workforce and the community.
