Art is a means of creative communication and expression. The programs in the Department of Art offer students the opportunity to acquire a background of understanding and skills, and to develop their abilities in the visual arts. The programs prepare students for advanced professional study in art as well as for many professions in teaching, business, and industry. Students with career interests in animation, ceramics, graphic design, photography, illustration, painting, printmaking, sculpture, art history, fashion and textiles, and art education will find appropriate programs or courses of study in the department.
Students pursuing careers in other fields may benefit from combining the study of art with their professional preparation. The Bachelor of Arts degree program, and the Master of Arts and Master of Fine Arts degree programs are described below.

Exhibitions of Work
The Fine Arts Gallery of the Department of Art presents exhibitions of artwork by established professional artists as well as by faculty and students. Graduate student thesis exhibitions are presented each semester. In addition, the student-run exhibition space, COMA Gallery, presents rotating exhibitions of Cal State L.A. student artwork. All exhibitions are free and open to the public.
Graduate Program General Information
The Department of Art offers graduate programs that lead to Master of Arts and Master of Fine Arts degrees. These programs involve students in advanced studies and artistic practices that provide an understanding of art as a humanistic and cultural activity. In addition, these degrees provide a sound foundation for students pursuing professional careers in various fields of art, and may be the basis for further education in the field.
