Business Administration, M.B.A.

This is a broad, management-oriented degree with two tracks: the Main track and the Executives track. The Main track provides an integrated sequence of required courses and additional elective courses in selected concentrations. Having a different integrated sequence of required courses, the Executives track provides unspecified - and possibly Interdisciplinary - elective courses that can be tailored to the specific professional needs of different groups of students.

MBA Main Track


This program track is designed for individuals of widely varied backgrounds. Elective courses provide for concentration in one of the following areas: accounting, business analytics, business economics, entrepreneurship, entertainment business management, information systems, finance, health care management, human resource management, international business, management, and marketing.  Students may also obtain the MBA degree with a customized concentration with advisor approval.

Admission to the Program

To be admitted to the program, students must fulfill University requirements for admission to graduate study and college requirement for admission to the MBA program.  Applicants are admitted based on a comprehensive review of their work experience, prior education, GMAT scores, and letters of recommendation. Applicants must submit a separate graduate program application to the College of Business and Economics.

Foundation Courses (12 units)


All students must complete with a grade of “B” or better BUS 500 foundations of Business Administration (12 units) prior to taking core MBA courses. 

Note:


Students with a concentration in Accounting must also complete 20 quarter-units in accounting (ACCT 320A , 321 , 322  and ACCT 424B ). A grade of “B minus” or better is necessary for course credit transfer to satisfy the Accounting foundation requirements. Students with a concentration in Information Systems must have a basic background in Information Systems (equivalent to CIS 283 , 405 , and 406 ).

Requirements for the Degree (48 units)


In addition to meeting the foundation coursework requirements, a total of 48 units of 500-level courses is required for the degree.  The University also requires demonstration of writing proficiency by enrollment in and passing UNIV 400 Writing Proficiency Examination (0) within the first two quarters of study.

Culminating Experience (4 units)


BUS 594 Business Administration Project or Field Study (4).  The course is to be taken at the end of the student’s program.

Elective Courses (12 units)


Students should complete 12 unis of 500-level courses in the concentration with adviser approval. Students with a concentration in Entertainment Business Management should choose electives offered by the College of Business and Economics, or the College of Arts and Letters.  Students with a customized concentration may choose electives with Advisor approval from any of the 500-level courses offered by the Departments of the College of Business and Economics or other Departments of the University.

MBA for Executives Track


This program track is designed for groups of working business executives who as student cohorts will complete courses on a customized timetable and usually at special locations. The College will consider the particular needs of each group of students in selecting the specialized courses.

Admission to the Program

Applicants are admitted based on a comprehensive review of then work experience, an acceptable bachelor’s degree, GMAT or GRE scores, and letters of recommendation, and an interview. The work requirement will generally be three to five years of significant experience.  Applicants who document 5 years of significant work experience in a managerial or professional role may be exempted from the GMAT or GRE requirement, with the College’s approval.  In addition to meeting University requirements for admission to graduate study, applicants must submit a separate graduate program application to the College of Business and Economics.
