Education: Option in Creative Literacies and Literature in the Elementary Classroom, M.A.

Admissions to Education, M.A.


Applicants must meet University requirements for admission to graduate study. In addition, applicants should have completed EDEL 405 or its equivalent (for the Bilingual/Multicultural Education in the Elementary Classroom option or the Curriculum and Instruction in the Urban School option), EDEL 417 or its equivalent (for the Mathematics option), EDEL 418 or its equivalent (for the Science option) have attained a minimum of 2.75 grade point average in the last 90 quarter nits attempted, and have consulted with a faculty adviser. A score of 600 or higher on TOEFL is required for visa students. Finally, a valid teaching credential issued by California or any state is recommended by completion of the program.

Requirements for the Degree (46 units)


A total of 46 units is required, with at least 23 in 500-level courses. A comprehensive examination is required except for students selecting the Science Education option or the Creative Literacies and Literature option. Students who select the Science Education or the Creative Literacies and Literature option may choose to take the comprehensive examination or complete either a thesis or project after consulting an adviser. Students who intend to register in courses they wish to apply on a master’s degree should consult an adviser prior to registration. Option Area - (33 units)


Comprehensive Examination, or Thesis or Project (0, 7 units)


Required for all options except Science Education and the Creative Literacies and Literature option.

Students who choose the Creative Literacies and Literature option may choose the Comprehensive Exam or Thesis/Project after consultation with and advisor.

Students who select the comprehensive examination should expect to take it (EDEL 596) after they have completed all course work in their program and must comply with college and division requirements. Under special circumstances, and with prior approval from their M.A. program coordinator, students may take a maximum of five units of their program course work concurrently during the quarter they take their comprehensive examination.
