The major role of the College of Business and Economics is to equip students with the intellectual and professional tools needed to assume responsible positions in business, industry, education, government, and social service organizations. The College prepares students with a basic understanding of the social and economic environment of the local and global community, of which business institutions are an integral part. Further, the College provides a market-driven and hands-on curriculum dealing with all functional areas in business.

The College of Business and Economics offers undergraduate degree programs in Business Administration, Computer Information Systems, and Economics, as well as several minors and credit certificate programs. Graduate programs offered by the College are described below.

Accreditation

The College of Business and Economics is nationally accredited, at both graduate and undergraduate levels, by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB). The College has been accredited since 1960.

All departmental and program information can be found in the corresponding section under Academic Programs: Department, Division, School, and Interdisciplinary Program-based.

Undergraduate Programs

The College offers undergraduate programs leading to bachelor’s degrees in Business Administration, Computer Information Systems, and Economics. It also offers minors in Accounting, Basic Business, Computer Information Systems, Economics, Entertainment and Marketing, Entrepreneurship, Finance, Healthcare Management, Management, Marketing, Operations and Supply Chain Management, Retail, Social Media, and Sustainability Marketing. Several credit certificate programs are offered as well. Students are required to complete lower-division major and minor courses before taking upper-division courses.

The Business Administration, B.S. degree program provides a broad range of training in all key functional areas in business. It equips students with business-related skills that can be applied to various types of business entities and government agencies. In addition, students are required to select a specialty area (option) based on their interest and career plan. Use the link above for detailed information about the program and its options.

The Bachelor of Arts Degree in Economics prepares students for positions in business and government. Specific areas include finance, labor, international trade, banking, and regulatory agencies. See the Department of Economics and Statistics section for further information.

The Bachelor of Science Degree in Computer Information Systems prepares students for careers as information systems professionals and provides the specialized knowledge needed for professional employment in an enterprise-level information systems department in all size organizations. See the Department of Information Systems section for further information.

Graduate and Postbaccalaureate Programs

The College offers programs leading to master’s degrees in six fields:

The Master of Business Administration (MBA) degree offers professional preparation for management positions in business and industry. It is designed for holders of a baccalaureate in business as well as other academic fields. See the section on Interdisciplinary Business for more information.

The Master of Science degree in Business Administration is designed for students who want to pursue a graduate degree in Business Administration, but are more research-oriented.  A master’s thesis, which involves identifying a business issue and conduct an original research, is an essential part of the program. The training also serves as a pathway for a doctoral degree.

The Master of Science degree in Accountancy is designed to provide specific professional preparation in the following options: Accounting Information Systems, Financial and Public Accounting, and Taxation. See the Department of Accounting section for further information.

The Master of Science degree in Information Systems meets the advanced education needs of IS/IT professionals whose career goals are primarily professional, rather than the managerial goals under the Information Systems Option in MBA. See the Department of Information Systems section for further information.

The Master of Arts degree in Economics provides students with advanced skills in applied and real-world-oriented economic research, in preparation for careers in business, industry, government, and education, or for further graduate study. See the Department of Economics and Statistics section for more information.

The Master of Science degree in Healthcare Management is designed to prepare professionals in the healthcare industry to meet the increasing demand placed on middle- and upper-level managers in large metropolitan healthcare facilities. The program goal is achieved through interdisciplinary courses primarily in the College of Business and Economics and the College of Health and Human Services.
For more information, see the Department of Management section.
